Hypnobirthing & Antenatal Teacher in Farnham, Surrey

Hi lovely,

I'm Zara! I live in Farnham, in Surrey with my two growing boys, Otto & Ebby. I love being outside, walking the dog, reading & cold-water swimming.

I have been a primary school teacher for around 14 years & continue to teach part-time in the most wonderful local school, which my children now attend. Since having my babies, I developed a passion for birth & a desire to support and nurture other women through the transition to motherhood. With my children growing older, I decided to train as a hypnobirthing instructor and  founded Connected Mother & Baby.

Having a baby in Surrey

I grew up in Farnham so know the local area very well! I have seen the town grow and change and in motherhood I found it to be the most perfect place to raise a family. â€‹

When I had my first baby in 2015, I was lucky enough to connect with a group of other Farnham mums through an antenatal course. These women became everything to me in the following months; I cannot emphasis how valuable it is to share those first experiences of motherhood with others who are in the same boat. After a difficult birth, I had a very unsettled baby but was completely committed to nurturing our attachment & to breastfeeding. At times, it was utterly overwhelming and being able to reach out to others who could relate to what I was going through in those moments was my life raft.

My son suffered with what may have been reflux but is commonly labelled as colic. As a new mother, it is excruciating to see your baby in pain and to have no way to soothe them. When he was less than 2 weeks old, in turmoil one evening, I rang the health visitor desperate for advice & support, only to be told 'some babies are just like that, there's not much you can do about it'. I was devastated & felt utterly lost and broken.

Luckily for me, at the time there was a wonderful Sure Start center in Farnham, based at Potters Gate School. I reached out to them during the struggles of those first few weeks. The team there were wonderful & just by them listening to me & acknowledging my struggles the load felt a bit lighter. They were able to signpost me to some incredible local services.

I began to learn baby massage. This gave me something practical that I could do to support my baby's digestion & hopefully ease his discomfort. It also became a really beautiful part of our week, connecting in a calming space, meeting other mums with their babies, sharing our experiences & sharing cake! I would highly recommend taking a look at the baby massage classes offered by the wonderful Laura at Yo Farnham.

My journey with breastfeeding led me to the incredible La Leche League and their weekly meet ups were my safe space. The community at La Leche is so nourishing &  supportive. They provide a completely non-judgemental & inclusive container where, alongside amazing breast feeding support, woman are free to share their experience of breastfeeding & motherhood. The space allowed me to be vulnerable and the community, advice & guidance enabled me to feed both of my babies until they were toddlers. La Leche League hold weekly breastfeeding support groups in Farnham and you can find more info here.

Following a La Leche meeting, I decided to try Osteopathy for my unsettled baby. Osteopathy is a holistic therapy that can be used to release tightness & tension that babies may store in their body as a result of birth or their positioning within the womb.  Osteopathy can help to relieve some of the symptoms that result from these pressures, making a baby more comfortable. Both of my babies visited the Osteopath during their first few months & it was like witnessing magic! There are some fabulous Osteopaths in and around Farnham. I highly recommend Meadowside Osteopathy or Oak Park Clinic in Crondall.

If you are local to Farnham than Farnham Library is somewhere you must become familiar with when you have your baby. They offer donation based weekly Rhymetime sessions aimed at babies and toddlers and also hold regular Storytimes. I found having just a few things scheduled in helped to give some structure to my week and Rymetime was one we never missed!

Farnham Library also has lots of beautiful baby books which can be borrowed. Did you know, the benefits of reading with your child begin from birth! Farnham also has a lovely library garden which is a fantastic place to take in a moment of calm with your baby.

Finally, we are blessed in Farnham to have so many beautiful outdoor spaces. Being outside in nature can have significant benefits on your mental & physical health.

When my babies were small, I loved to pop them in a carrier (you can find the one I used here) and get out for a walk. Some of my favourite local routes include:

  • A loop of Farnham Park

  • Frensham Little Pond

  • The Bourne Woods

  • Bishop's Meadow
